Matthew 5:10-12 – Blessed are the Persecuted

Found in Matthew 5:1-12, the beatitudes (from an old latin word meaning blessings) are eight pronouncements of blessing Jesus makes to his disciples. Jesus came as a merciful king to rescue rebels out of the kingdom of darkness into his kingdom of light. These two kingdoms stand in stark contrast to each other. In the beatitudes, our rescuing king begins to teach his people, former citizens of the kingdom of darkness, about their new life as citizens of his kingdom.
