Broken Cisterns – Jeremiah 2:11-13

We are created to worship. More specifically, we are created to worship Jesus. But, in our rebellion our worship terminates on all kinds of created things, and people, rather than on our creator and rescuing king, Jesus. The Bible calls all of these substitute gods idols. Jeremiah compares these idols to broken cisterns – sources of absolutely nasty water. Meanwhile, Jesus is the only source of living water – the good, refreshing, clean, sustaining, life giving source of life. Jesus said: “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” Now, this he said about the Spirit…”
